  Significant Trials and Cases
Mark Rick Realty v. Snowden Construction, Inc. – The firm represented Snowden Construction in this case brought by the developer of a subdivision in Monclova Township, Ohio. The developer sued Snowden, which had done the underground waste and water system work and the road construction, for alleged delay in completion of the project. The developer claimed the delay led to losses of several hundred thousand dollars. Following a jury trial, the plaintiff was awarded approximately 1.5% of the damages it sought but Snowden prevailed completely on its counterclaim for unpaid fees, receiving an award many multiples of the amount recovered by the plaintiff.

United States v. Sirls – Rick and Steve defended a stock broker accused fraud and theft in connection with a Ponzi-type scheme involving some $40 million in investor funds. Faced with a detailed trail of evidence and open admissions by the defendant, Steve negotiated an extremely attractive plea bargain and convinced the sentencing court to impose a sentence resulting in less than four years imprisonment.

State of Ohio, ex rel. Joanne Wack v. City of Toledo, et al. – Then Executive Director of the Lucas County Republican Party Joanne Wack filed suit (as a taxpayer) against the City and every Democrat on City Council, alleging illegal action by members of Council through violations of the Ohio’s Sunshine Law. Steve was hired to represent one of the members of Council, and worked with co-counsel Rick Brunner of Columbus, who represented the rest of them. Steve and Brunner scheduled a quick deposition of the plaintiff, and there they took turns wringing out of the plaintiff the meritless nature, and political motivation, of the lawsuit. The deposition was so devastating for the plaintiff that she dismissed her case the next day and never re-filed.

Ramos v. Clouse – The Plaintiff claimed fraud against our client in connection with the sale of multiple franchised restaurants in northwestern Ohio. The case was tried to a jury in federal court and Steve won a defense verdict on all claims.

United States v. El Hindi –At the request of the Chief Judge of the federal court Steve represented Marwan El Hindi, a man accused of conspiring to provide material support to terrorists. It was a complex and extremely high profile case. The case took over three years and the trial in federal court that lasted over three months. Our client was convicted on conspiracy charges, but the judge was convinced at sentencing to treat the case for what it really was, and the client received a sentence of 12 years despite the government aggressively seeking life in prison. At the time of this writing the appeal was pending.

State v. Reynolds - Our client was charged with aggravated robbery and felonious assault in connection with a shooting that left the victim paralyzed from the waste down. He was identified by the victim as being the only shooter. The defense focused on the multiple drugs in the victims system at the time of the identification and the lack of follow up investigation by the police. Trial in state court concluded when the jury returned verdicts of not guilty as to all counts.
