Significant Trials and Cases
Steve has been with Rick and Jessica Kerger since he was in law school, and is now a partner in Kerger & Hartman. His passion as a trial lawyer has helped him build an impressive record in civil and criminal trials in federal and state courts. He has handled a wide array of complex and high profile cases, and his areas of focus are business/commercial litigation, criminal defense, insurance coverage and Constitutional Law. He has argued in the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Ohio Supreme Court, and the Sixth and Ninth District state appellate Courts.

In 2009, Steve was awarded the Trustees Award by the Toledo Bar Association. It is an award given out each year to a member of the bar who exemplifies professionalism and has done notable work to advance the practice of law. He was nominated and selected as a member of the inaugural class of the Ohio State Bar Association Leadership Academy. Steve was also selected as a “Rising Star” among lawyers in Ohio by Cincinnati Magazine’s SuperLawyers in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, and was profiled for that publication in 2005. In 2007, he was selected for the “20 Under 40,” leadership recognition award in the city of Toledo.

For the past five years he has co-chaired and hosted the Nicholas J. Walinski Federal Court Practice Seminar for the Toledo Bar Association, and currently serves as Chairman of the T.B.A. Federal Court Committee. He is admitted to practice in the United States Supreme Court, the Sixth Circuit, the Northern and Southern Districts of Ohio, the Eastern District of Michigan, and the Ohio Supreme Court. Steve is a member of the Federal, Ohio and Toledo Bar Associations as well as the National and Maumee Valley Criminal Defense Lawyers Associations. He recently concluded a four year term as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Family Service of Northwestern Ohio, a Northwestern Ohio not-for-profit organization dedicated to “Empowering Families to Manage Life’s Changes.” He earned his J.D. and an M.B.A. from the University of Toledo.
